This software manages all processes related to the early detection of trisomy 21 or Down syndrome during pregnancy. Down's syndrome is a chromosomal disorder caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome (1 per 800 to 1,000 births), although the risk increases according to certain factors such as the age of the mother. For this reason it is necessary to make a karyotype of the fetus during pregnancy through either a cytogenetic study of the amniotic fluid (amniocentesis) or a chorionic biopsy.
The Prenatal Screening is made between 14 and 18 weeks of gestation allowing specialists to detect this risk.
The best biochemical markers for achieving this are the alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (ßhCG).
